The 2017 Dinner Celebration & Auction featuring Austin Dillon, driver of the No. 3 Chevrolet for Richard Childress Racing was held on Wednesday, June 28th at the DAYTONA 500 Club at Daytona International Speedway. It was a tremendous success with over $100,000 (net) raised to go toward immediate needs in SMA’s mental health programs. These funds were raised through sponsorships, ticket sales, individual contributions, a live auction and forfeiture funds from the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office. A list of our sponsors can be found at the end of this page.
Why were the funds put toward mental health this year? Well, here are some of the reasons:
- Mental health disorders are the leading cause of disability in the US, and our local, mental health statistics are shocking. For example, suicide rates in Volusia, Putnam, Flagler and St. Johns Counties are all significantly higher than both state and national averages.
- Multiple, local community health needs assessments ranked mental health for adults and children to be two of the top 5 community health concerns.
- The importance of effective, mental health programs is well-researched and documented, but funding for them, like SMA’s FACT Program, continues to be reduced or could possibly even be eliminated each year.

The live auction brought in over $18,000 with Andrew Gurtis as the auctioneer. Austin Dillon really stepped up by adding an additional firesuit and magnum bottle of Childress Vineyards wine so that the two large bidders each walked away winners. Other highlights of the auction was the Stetson cowboy hat signed by all of the performers at the 2017 Country 500, modeled by Austin’s fiancé during the event, hot laps with Austin at DIS, 2017 Daytona 500 Leather jacket and an All Access NBC NASCAR TV package. The theme “The Great Outdoors” and recommended dress for the event of “Camo Couture” also seemed to be a big hit. SMAF loved having the Penny Creek Band setting the mood with contemporary bluegrass music.SPECIAL THANKS TO ALL OUR
